The Issue

AI is reshaping our world, but at what cost?

If we don’t demand corporate accountability now, we risk locking in decades of fossil fuel reliance for AI infrastructure.

Right now, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank—backed by Trump and the U.S. Government—are building $500 billion worth of AI data centers that will define the future of artificial intelligence. But these centers are primarily running on fossil fuels, not renewable energy.

AI data centers already consume as much electricity as some small countries. Without action, this expansion could significantly increase carbon emissions, undoing progress toward a sustainable future and accelerating climate change exponentially.

Yet, OpenAI—one of the most influential leaders in AI development—has not made a clear commitment to power its AI with renewable energy or to disclose its environmental impact.

⚠️ The Trump Administration Is Directly Supporting This Expansion and Actively Moving Away from Climate Action ⚠️

The U.S. government is actively fast-tracking the project—cutting bureaucratic oversight to speed up construction of AI data centers.

Despite its massive energy demands, there are no federal sustainability requirements—meaning these data centers could be powered by fossil fuels for decades.

President Trump has openly stated that his administration does not believe in climate change and has withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement. Instead of pushing for AI to be powered by clean energy, the administration is doubling down on fossil fuel expansion. (White House)

We cannot rely on the federal government to regulate AI’s environmental impact.

Under the current administration:

🚨 The U.S. withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement (again). (White House)

🚨 Clean-energy programs have been slashed. The Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office lost 25% of its workforce (Wall Street Journal).

🚨 $20 billion in clean-energy grants were rescinded. (AP News)

🚨 The administration is actively increasing fossil fuel use for AI and calling net-zero climate goals “sinister.” (Reuters)

With the federal government abandoning responsibility, AI companies like OpenAI have the power—and the duty—to lead on sustainability.

⚠️ OpenAI Acknowledges AI’s Climate Impact—But Hasn’t Taken Action ⚠️

Even OpenAI knows AI’s environmental impact is serious:

  • OpenAI has publicly discussed AI’s energy consumption problem—but has not committed to sustainability. (Scientific American)
  • OpenAI’s own community has called for sustainable AI development. (OpenAI Community Forum)

Now, we are calling on OpenAI to back up its words with action.

We Demand OpenAI Commit to Sustainable AI Development. 📢

We are calling on OpenAI to:

Publicly disclose the energy sources powering its AI data centers.

✅ Commit to transitioning to 100% renewable energy.

✅ Release a clear sustainability roadmap to minimize AI’s carbon footprint.

OpenAI has positioned itself as a leader in responsible AI development. If it truly stands for innovation that benefits humanity, it must also take responsibility for AI’s environmental impact.

We are calling on OpenAI’s leadership—Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Sarah Friar, and Kevin Weil—to commit to sustainability, as well as key partners in AI infrastructure like Larry Ellison (Oracle) and Masayoshi Son (SoftBank).
